For my daughters third birthday we decided to turn our guest room into Stella’s big girl room. Stella of course helped us paint, but had no clue what or why we were painting. After that she wasn’t allowed in the room. The morning of her birthday we had arrows leading her to the door covered in wrapping paper. She gently pulled back the paper and this is what she saw …
My husband found this mannequin for $10 when I was pregnant with Stella. I just knew I had to find a way to make it special and create something she would eventually be able to dress and play with as she grew.
I knew I wanted to keep most of Stella’s toys set up in her large walk in closet to keep her bedroom organized and clean. So I set up her little wooden kitchen in her closet. I bought five large baskets that we could fill with stuffed animals and dolls; this makes for super easy clean up that a three year old can easily handle. I handmade the ribbon banner by basically choosing about six different ribbons and tying them in knots on a rope. This is an easy and inexpensive way to fill a large wall space with something other than pictures.
I wanted a table in Stella’s room for tea parties, art, puzzles and games. I wanted to create a wall that was more 3D in nature and felt less flat than a traditional picture wall. I also wanted a little nightlight for middle of the night trips to the bathroom and I found this adorable light up star for $15.
I had some nice Pottery Barn curtains left over from Stella’s nursery so I decided to jazz them up by sewing on black pom-poms to the insides of each panel.
I’ve never seen a three year old so excited. I wanted each corner of her room to feel magical and be a place with a purpose for her to use her imagination, be creative, sleep peacefully and dance her heart out.
The day of her birthday party Stella took everyone on a tour of her new big girl room. It was so sweet, she really appreciated all the details and definitely lets her imagination run wild.
